the tales of mp3 quality

Ok, the reason for this note is:
many people are telling that mp3 filez have "pure CD quality". I'm not against MP3, and I like it for demo publishing, portable music players, and so on. Now for the quality: on many files you can hear strange noises in high frequency instruments (e.g. HH).

Some days ago I discovered some pure sawlines on a CD; they should be used for CD grabbing quality tests, but I thought it would be great to see what some MP3 encoders (which are based on the idea that music contains sinus waves - ever listened to propellerheads, yamiroquai, ... ?) would make of it.

For now, let the images speak for themselves - I think I know where all those "strange sounds" come from:

(original wave file)

(created by wavelab 3.0 using highest quality, 128 bit, 44kHz)

(created by MP3compressor 1.09, quick mode, 128bit, 44kHz)
